tired, but not complaining

I got that contract today. It was a nice one. I'll be able to pay bills this month. This is a good thing.

I'm tired. I was up late and then worked like a dog today. Not complaining. Just tired. Happy for the work, concerned that I'm too busy to get more.

Polly organized a get together networking thing at a local pub. We had a great turnout. But I realized that I can't keep going to these things. I know everyone and they're all unemployed. I know that they'll get jobs eventually and maybe bring me in. But I have to start playing with the big boys again. The employed boys. Who can pay me now.

Damn. Lots of people out of work. I'm getting the feeling Portland is especially bad. I mean, out of the 50 people there tonight, I'll bet 40 were either unemployed or underemployed or hanging by a thread. One girl had been laid of September 11th. That's beyond heartless.

It's amazing to me how much grief we all can actually bear, and keep moving on. I just hope, although it seems unlikely, that this is it. Or, at least, that if there's more to come, something gets better. Maybe all I can hope for is better resiliency.

Tomorrow, at 9 o'clock, A* will know if he's still got a job. The odds look like they're in his favor, but you never know. He's only been there a month.

If he does make it, and he gets paid this week, I am so going shopping. I haven't bought fall clothes for two years, people. I'm not kidding. I have nothing to wear. Nothing. Oh, for the days of girlfriends.* Target will have to do I'm afraid. Or perhaps I'll find a nice consignment store downtown.

Going to bed. So tired and so much to do tomorrow.

Tomorrow! Wednesday! WEST WING PREMIER!! Woo hoo!

*girlfriends is the best girly boutique in all of Portland. They have tiny little shirts and shiney jeans. Yum.
